Art Shop Gallery shows its appreciation for customers with a special gift and art drawing. The first 50 people to come in between 5-7:30 p.m. will receive a special gift and everyone will have a chance to win a framed art card, “Snug,” by Alaska artist Jon Van Zyle. A drawing will take place at the end of the evening. You do not need to be present to win.

10×10 Show by various artists
A silent auction for works in the third annual 10×10 member’s show closes at 6 p.m. for First Friday. The works have been available for silent auction bidding for the past two weeks. More than 30 artists have submitted works in various media, all with the restriction that the work be no larger than 10-inches square or 10-inches cubed. The exhibit will remain hung until Dec. 18.

Wildlife art by John Lofgreen
5-7 p.m., First Friday Reception
Anchorage wildlife artist John Lofgreen shows his work. Since early childhood, his life has maintained two consistent themes: art and animals. Lofgreen grew up in Arizona and California with fivebrothers, three sisters and a menagerie of animals. He jokes that he learned to draw in school, during math, English and history.
This doodling soon came to the attention of his school teachers who encouraged him to develop his talent. An avid birder and pursuing a career as a wildlife artist, he worked for various government agencies doing wildlife surveys and research. He spent many years as the field trip leader for local Audubon Society chapters.
Lofgreen’s work has been displayed in art galleries in Carmel and San Jose, Calif., Sedona, Ariz., Lake City, Minn., Nova Scotia, Costa Rica, Fairbanks, Anchorage and Homer. He has won many art contests and been a finalist in prestigious events such as Arts for the Parks and the Federal duck stamp competitions.
“I have always been inspired by the majesty of the natural world. My desire as an artist is to emphasize in my artwork the
aspects of nature that impress me the most,” Lofgreen says of his work.

Puzuri ornaments by various artists
5-7 p.m., Dec. 8, Second Friday Reception
There is no First Friday show at the Homer Council on the Arts as staff and volunteers set up for the Nutcracker Faire. Next Friday, Dec. 8, HCOA displays Puzuri ornaments created by students in Gundega Sneptse’s class. Puzuri is a traditional Latvian art that makes ornaments and hanging sculptures from reeds, grass and other natural fibers.

New work by Sebastian Troy Pierre
5-7 p.m., First Friday Reception
Florida transplant Sebastian Troy Pierre moved to Homer nine months ago and has already left his mark on the art community. His work emits the energy inherent in nature, and his primary colors blend beautifully into the secondary colors. Most of his work also has intriguing backlighting. He teaches painting to budding artists at Homer Council on the Arts and believes that art is his raft upon which he floats through the world, projecting positive energy that he hopes the viewer receives.
