Volleyball:

The varsity volleyball team had two home games last week, during which Head Coach Erin Brege said the players got a lot of experience. They fell first to Seward High School on Friday, Sept. 29, with the Seahawks winning three sets (25-21, 25-15 and 25-7) and Homer winning one set, 25-23.

For that game, freshman Laura Inama, who was recently pulled up to the varsity team, had three aces, three kills and 16 digs. Sophomore Karmyn Gallios had four kills and 20 digs, while sophomore Marina Carroll four blocks and junior Ksenia Kuzmin had six assists.

Then on Sept. 30, the Mariners fell to Anchorage Christian School 0-3. ACS won the first three sets 25-22, 25-21 and 25-20. During that game, Gallios had 12 digs, Carroll had two blocks and four aces and Inama had two kills and nine digs.

Brege said there have been several changes to rotations and positions over the last few weeks. Getting used to those change-ups takes effort away from skills practice and technique, which will be the team’s focus as they’ve gotten used to the new positions, she said.

It’s a building year for the team, with several sophomores and only one senior, Brege said.

Football: The Homer Mariners varsity football team won 53-0 in a home game Friday, Sept. 29 against the Head of the Bay Cougars. It was also senior night for players and cheerleaders, and the team was presented with a plaque after the game recognizing their Division III Peninsula Conference title.
