Homer girls, boys nab second in borough cross country championships
Not even the strong, biting wind that rolled through the Lookout Mountain Trails on Tuesday afternoon could blow the Homer cross-country runners off course, as both the girls and boys varsity teams claimed second place at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Cross-Country Runners Championship.
The Homer-hosted meet boasted runners from all over the borough, including Razdolna and Nikolaevsk. The Homer varsity boys team came in second with 45 points, and the girls varsity team nabbed the same place against their competitors with 33 points.
Sophomore Autumn Daigle claimed second place individually in the varsity girls race, with a time of 10 minutes, 51 seconds, and senior Jacob Davis took first overall for the varsity boys with a time of 9:18.
Coach Annie Ridgley said she was pleased with the performance of all the Homer teams, noting that the boys varsity team had lost one member and had to make up for that with faster times.
“It couldn’t have gone any better,” she said. “We have a really powerful girl team; they’re really strong, looking good. They pack up together and race really well.”
Ridgley applauded both Davis teammate Luca Fasulo for reaching finishing times under 10 minutes, which she said are fast for 3K races, especially on the Lookout Mountain course.
“It’s real hilly, real rolly on the ankles,” she said.
Ridgley said she expects all her runners to PR at the Homer Time Trial on the Spit this Saturday.
