The Chariots of Fur 5K and Family Fun Run will be held from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, July 14 in Mariner Park. This is the third annual event.

There will be a hazardous waste collection day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.,. Saturday, July 7 at the Homer Transfer Facility. This event is for households and small businesses. It will be free to households with fees charged to commercial disposers.

Democratic Primary U.S. House of Representatives Debate will be held in Homer from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 10. CAN (Citizen’s AKtion Network) and The District 31 Democrats are sponsoring and hosting a debate at the Pioneer Hall at Kachemak Bay Campus between undeclared candidate Alyse Galvin and Democratic candidate Dimitri Shein, who are running for the U.S. House of Representatives seat in the Democratic primary. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the formal moderated debate will be held at 6 p.m. and is to be followed by one hour of questions and answers with both candidates answering questions from both the on site and online audiences. A Kachemak Bay Birders’ road trip up to the Captain Cook Recreation Area (north of Nikiski) will be Saturday, June 23. Meet at the Stormy Lake boat ramp parking area up there at 10 a.m. or at Islands and Ocean Visitor Center parking lot to car pool at 7 a.m.

The Kachemak Bay Birders’ next trip will be Saturday, May 26 on the Bay Crest Trail for a walk in the forest to listen for and observe our local songbirds. Meet at the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center at 6:45 a.m. to carpool or at the trailhead on Roger’s Loop Road at 7 a.m.

May 5 is World Labyrinth Day, when thousands of people across the world will “Walk as One at 1” for peace. This event will be celebrated locally at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 619 Sterling Highway, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities include blessings, an interfaith litany for world peace, and prayer flag painting.

Homer Wilderness Leaders (HoWL) will host the annual DiRtBaG Ball from 5-7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21 at Alice’s Champagne Palace, as the culmination of clean-up week. It is free to attend and family friendly, including live music by the Stringalongs, an all-you-can-eat sundae bar, DiRtBaG awards and door prizes.

A Conflict Resolution Skills/Alternatives to Violence basic workshop will be held from 5-9 p.m. Friday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 28 and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29 at 59835 Tern Court in Homer. The workshop is presented by the Alaska Training Cooperative and Alaska Hands of Peace. This workshop presents skills to help reduce conflicts in work and everyday settings. Homer Area Nonprofit Directors will present an Advocacy, Economics and Innovation Seminar Sunday and Monday, April 8-9 at the Pratt Museum, Kachemak Bay Campus and Homer City Hall.

The Kachemak Bay Birders will meet on Monday, April 2 at 4:30 p.m. at the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center in the auditorium. Following the meeting, Aaron Lang will present “Shorebird Identification.” Shorebirds are on their way and it’s always fun to learn a little more how to tell them apart. Aaron has excellent photos showing what we should look for and contrasts with confusable species. This is an excellent way to learn more and enjoy the beauty of these amazing birds. All meetings are free and everyone is invited to attend. All events are cosponsored by the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. If you have questions, contact Lani Raymond, 399-9477.

Guitar legend Dennis Agajanian plays at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 24 at the Refuge Chapel. All are welcome. This is a musician who travelled extensively with the Billy Graham ministry.

The Kachemak Bay Birders’ next trip is to Seaside Farms, Mile 5 East End Road on Sunday, March 18. Meet at 2 p.m. in the parking area at the top of the hill to walk down the hill to birding habitat at Seaside Farms. Bring binoculars, field guide and a spotting scope if you have one. All Kachemak Bay Birding trips are cosponsored by the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. All trips are free and everyone is welcome to attend.
