A “Big” thank you to the Jenson Fund of the Homer Foundation for their donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters and our job training project for middle school-aged Littles and their Bigs. Through their generosity and collaboration with the Homer Job Center, we are able to implement a job training program to help our Teen Littles build job skills through hands-on work and learning how to find employment and apply for jobs.
A “Big” thank you to the Homer Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee and the Sheldon Youth to Youth fund for their donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters and our matches. Through their generosity, our program was able to purchase several swim passes for Bigs and Littles. This grant not only supports a healthy activity for Bigs and Littles to participate in but also engages our Littles in the community and is a great opportunity for them to work on their social skills.
For National Mentoring Month, Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to thank the following businesses who provided 2-for-1 discounts to our Bigs and Littles when they met for mentoring activities during 2012: Jelly Beans Ice Cream & Gifts, Homestead Restaurant, Fresh Sourdough Express Bakery, Cosmic Kitchen, Land’s End Resort, Two Sisters Bakery, Homer Bookstore, Boss Hoggz, Boardwalk Bakery, Tangles Hair Salon, Homer Theater, Homer Shotokan Karate Club, Damselfly Hair Salon, Pratt Museum, True North Kayaking, Ashore Water Taxi, Pier One, Homer Council
As a volunteer Big Brother I have a wonderful time at West Homer school with my Little Brother. I enjoy hanging out with younger kids and that is a large part of why I wanted to be a Big. I help my Little with school, and occasionally I get to go out to recess with him. Once we even went ice skating and I helped him learn to skate. Mentoring has a very tangible impact on children's lives. No matter how large or small the impact, it's always a positive one. Plus, thanks to Big Brothers Big Sisters, I gained a fantastic new friend.
High School Big Brother
Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to thank the Homer Foundation for awarding our program a grant to purchase a new camera and video recorder. These funds have been put to good use documenting our new matches and group activities. The video recorder is not only allowing us to interview our Bigs and Littles for fundraising events but also for use by our matches for fun activities. We already have one Teen Sister who is using the recorder to make her own movie. Thank you, Homer Foundation, for starting something big and supporting mentoring in our community.
