Oped - Keep the library in the greenAlso on the site list was the parcel owned by the University of Alaska. It is located between the Cook Inlet Region Inc.-owned land and the Heritage Hotel. This site would also provide a favorable location, but would require considerably more site development, including the extension of city sewer and water, and an access street off Pioneer Avenue. That plan is dandy, but is a little more distant in development. The city has not yet acquired the site, nor has a plan for development of the city-owned parcel adjacent to it been developed. It sounds like the library is ready to move faster than the city, which still needs to develop solid plans for the Town Square area. If the library builds on the Hazel Avenue site, it still is not far away from the Town Square, and will be a nice addition to the concept. The city should also continue to move forward on acquiring the university site for other public purposes. It is a nice parcel, located adjacent to the city-owned land, and as such, has potential.
