New Year's Eve 2009 at Alice's might not be as controversial as in 1976 when the bar then known as the Club Bar unveiled Brad Hughes' "Phoenix" nude couple sign, but it should still be a good a time. Live from Nanwalek and elsewhere around Kachemak Bay, the English Bay Band gets the evening rolling. Watch the New Year unfold across America. with live TV broadcasts of celebrations in New York and Las Vegas. Party hats provided with a champagne toast at midnight.

Homer Youth String Orchestra Club Quartet Opens 6:30 tonight

For a sedate and festive New Year's Eve, the Homer Youth String Orchestra Club Quartet presents classical music. The Homestead serves its regular menu or a special five-course champagne dinner for $100 a person, tax and gratuity included. For reservations or information, call 235-8723.

Cheer on or compete in Homer's first Sumo Suit Jonokuchki Competition. To go belly-to-belly against wrestlers, sign up at 7:30 p.m.

Sunset Loop Ski Trails

Diamond Ridge Road west of Knott Circle

Friday Night Lights with a Saturday Encore

6-8 p.m., Friday and Saturday; $10 suggested donation each night; children free.

The Kachemak Nordic Ski Club sponsors lighted ski trails Homer style, with tiki torches set up around the Sunset Loop ski trails off Diamond Ridge Road. Bring headlamps for dark sections of the trail. Ski or snowshoe the entire loop. Park at the trailhead by AT&T satellite dishes west of Knott Circle. Fire and hot chocolate will be provided.

Bring a dish to share for an open house at the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies' Wynn Nature Center. There will be an astronomy talk followed by a moonlight snowshoe walk. Some snowshoes may be available to borrow, but bring your own snowshoes if you have them. Dress warmly.
