Deadline for nominations for Homer awards Jan. 5




Nominations are now being accepted for Homer's Community Awards Program. The awards presented are Citizen of the Year, which is presented to an individual for service to a wide variety of organizations and causes which benefit the entire community, and Business of the Year, which is presented to a commercial business which not only supports community activities and organizations in the community but also provides a worthy product or service to its customers and employees.

Nominations will be accepted until 9 a.m. Jan. 5. They will then be narrowed down to an official ballot. Voting will be open to the public and take place in January. Winners will be announced at the annual Community Awards Mixer on Feb. 5.

Nomination forms can be picked up at the chamber offices, Wells Fargo, First National Bank of Alaska, Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, Spenard Builders Supply, Ulmer's Drug & Hardware, Kachemak Gear Shed and Fritz Creek General Store.

Forms also can be faxed by request or downloaded from the chamber's Web site, www.homeralaska.org.

In other Homer chamber news:

* The Homer Chamber of Commerce office and the visitor center will close at 3 p.m. Dec. 24 and reopen Jan. 5.

* The Homer Winter Carnival, scheduled for Feb. 6, 7 and 8, 2009, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Alaska's statehood. The Winter Carnival Committee is sponsoring a contest to name the theme for this year's festivities. All suggested entries must reference the state's 50th anniversary. The winner will receive a basket of "Homer treasures" donated by various merchants.All entries must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. Jan. 5. Entries can be faxed to 235-8766, dropped off at the chamber office, 201 Sterling Highway, called into 235-7740 or e-mailed to info@homeralaska.org.

* The next Business Breakfast Roundtable will be from 8-9 a.m. Jan. 13.

Seating is limited to 18 people, with one seat per industry area. Participants receive two minutes to pitch their business and hand out literature. The roundtable is free for chamber members and $7 for non-members. To sign up, call the chamber at 235-7740.
