Small business center offers Homer seminars

Staff Report

The Kenai Peninsula's Small Business Development Center will offer three different workshops in Homer in January. All workshops will be taught by Bryan Zak, director of the center.

• There will be a free "Starting a Business" seminar on Jan. 16 and again Jan. 30. Both seminars will be from 10 a.m. until noon at the Homer Chamber of Commerce. Zak will answer basic questions about starting a business on the peninsula. Zak also will talk about the Small Business Development Center, its partner programs and its free counseling services.

Registration deadline is Jan. 9 for the Jan. 16 seminar and Jan. 23 for the Jan. 30 seminar.

• There will be a "Benefits of Budgeting" workshop from 1-3 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Homer Chamber of Commerce. Cost is $30.

Zak will provide participants with methods to monitor, measure and manage the amount of cash moving through their businesses. "Establishing budgets is the vital element that keeps every business financially healthy. Our Benefits of Budgeting workshop will guide you through the process," according to a press release from the center. Online registration is required by Jan. 16.

• There will be a two-day "Profit Mastery" seminar from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 18 and Jan. 19 at the Land's End conference room.

Normally the cost is $395, but the Jobs Bill allows the center to offer a special rate of $200 plus $25 for lunch on both days, according to a press release.

The seminar is "your best opportunity for knowledge-driven financial management education. This 16-hour, hands-on course will help you set goals for the future of your business, control spending and pricing. You will leave with a process to assess the performance of your business and a strategy to implement change. In addition to the program content, you will master the material through quizzes, lively discussion, guided practice and real-life application to your own business. Creating value and building wealth will empower you to make better business decisions and keep more of your hard-earned money," according to a press release from the center. The registration and payment deadline has been extended until Jan. 6.
