A memorial service is Dec. 5, 2002, at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Sun City Center.
Mrs. Jensen was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Seattle. She attended Seattle area public schools and the University of Washington. She married the late James "Jim" Jensen in 1950, and together they moved to Jim's hometown of Ketchikan. As Jan had explained to her family, "It was supposed to be temporary we were going to Alaska for just one year to help out my in-laws it ended up being nearly 40 years in Alaska!"
As partners in a family construction business, Odin Jensen & Son, Jim and Jan lived in Ketchikan, Petersburg, Dutch Harbor, Wrangell and Anchorage.
In 1972, the family relocated to Homer and began commercial fishing with their vessel, the M/V Miss Arctic. Jan had lived in Homer for 18 years when she moved to Florida in 1989. She was very active in Homer community affairs, such as the Chamber of Commerce, Homer Winter Carnival Committee, Homer United Methodist Church, Beta Sigma Phi and a longtime supporter of the Republican Party in Alaska.
Professionally, Jan was a real estate broker and past president of the Homer Board of Realtors. At the time of her death, she was a realtor with Beggins Century 21 in Sun City Center.
As described by her family, "Jan was a no-nonsense mom but she always kept her home open to others. We generally had an extra person or two staying with us. When friends' families were going through transitions or periods of instability, our mom was always willing to take someone into our home. Our friends always knew they had a comfortable place to go."
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Rev. Robert Schmeiser of Riverview, Fla.; son Tom Jensen of Bradenton, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law John Jensen and Karen Belmore of Wakefield, R.I., and daughter and son-in-law Anne and Lee Allman of Hammonton, N.J.; grandchildren Heather Mecsko, Miranda, Harriet and Thomas Smith, Eva Jensen and Derby Allman; great-granddaughter Krystianna Jensen; brother John Hutsell of Lacey, Wash.
Her husband, Jim, preceded Mrs. Jensen in death.
