DOT holds open house on slow-vehicle turnouts

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, is planning to add 22 slow-vehicle turnout lanes on the Sterling Highway between Soldotna and Homer. The pull-out areas are designated for use by slow-moving vehicles, allowing them to pull over and let faster traffic pass by. The project's purpose is to mitigate the number of head-on and rear-end crashed occurring at or near the selected turnout sites. Design is currently underway and construction will be completed in 2014. Between Ninilchik and Homer, turnouts are planned for mileposts 140, 145, 150, 155, 160 and 165. Open houses are scheduled for:

• Homer: Nov. 27, 4-7 p.m., Homer Middle School;

• Ninilchik: Nov. 28, 4-7 p.m., Ninilchik School;

• Kasilof: Nov. 29, 4-7 p.m., Tustumena Elementary School.
