In Homer, Anchor Point and Ninilchik, doors are opening to anyone wanting to come on in, sit right now and enjoy servings from the holiday's traditional menu.
"We'll provide the main course," said Caribou Family Restaurant waitress Sissie Frazier. "Everyone is welcome."
Dinner is served beginning at noon and continues until the food runs out. Diners are invited to bring a dish to share or an item to be donated to the Homer Community Food Pantry.
"But it's not a requirement," said Frazier.
Although there's no way to tell who will show up, there's no need to call ahead. There'll be plenty of food, according to Frazier.
"If it's anything like last year, it'll be awesome," she said.
Latitude 59 is getting a jump on the holiday Tuesday with a Thanksgiving menu served from 11:30 a.m. until the food runs out, which, in the past two years, has happened sometime between 2:30-3 p.m. For $10 a plate, diners can enjoy turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, gravy and dessert. Proceeds benefit Share the Spirit. Call-in orders are being accepted. In Anchor Point, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10221 also is opening wide its doors and inviting neighbors and friends, whether members of the post or not, to pull up a chair and enjoy for a Thanksgiving day meal including all the tasty items that have become part of the annual celebration.
"If you want to bring something, that's great. If not, that's OK, too," said Post Commander Pat Russell.
As with Caribou Family Restaurant, there's no need to call ahead. Be there anytime in the afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m.
"We don't take reservations," Russell said. "Just show up."
A few more miles up the Sterling Highway, Ninilchik residents are being issued an invitation to come by American Legion Post 18 and enjoy a meal featuring turkey, ham, stuffing, pies, relish traysyou name it.
In observance of the holiday, Anchor Point Senior Center will not be serving its regularly scheduled Thursday evening meal.
Roberta "Bert" Rieth, of the post, said the time has not yet been set. It should be posted on the reader board in front of the post soon, but it would be a good idea to call in advance just to make sure.
You don't have to be a member of the post or have reservations to accept the invitation.
"It's for whoever wants to come in and share the meal," Rieth said."
