Win one, lose one

The Homer High School hockey team notched a 6-1 win over the Soldotna junior varsity on Saturday in Kenai. The win was bittersweet for the Mariners, who will be without Brady Boone for a month or more after he suffered a broken forearm from a collision near the SoHi crease.

"That's going to be a detriment," team co-captain Ivan Bucher said of losing Brady.

Brady had already scored a pair of goals before his second-period injury.

Other Mariner goal scorers were Terry Shroyer, Bucher with a pair and Scott Owen on a feed from Giuseppe Ricciardi.

Junior Bryan Smith, playing in his first season between the pipes, got the win in goal.

Huskies hoop it up

The Homer Middle School basketball team fell 54-49 to visiting Soldotna in early-season action on Saturday.

Jacob Lee led the Huskies with 15 points, while six other Homer players found the scoring column.

Sea Otters roll on

Seldovia's Susan B. English School swept its way to the first-place hardware at the Kenny Lake Classic volleyball tournament last weekend.

The Sea Otters, who are undefeated on the season, didn't drop a single game during the five-team round-robin tourney. On Friday, Seldovia beat Tri Valley of Healy 15-9, 15-2, 15-9, before knocking off host Kenny Lake 15-11, 15-3, 15-5.

On Saturday, the Sea Otters bagged a rally-scoring win over Nenana 25-7, 25-14, 25-19. That put them in the championship match, which they won with a 15-2, 15-13, 15-8 sweep of rival Ninilchik.
