Surfriders unite

Ten people attended an organizational meeting of Alaska's first chapter of the Surfrider Foundation Oct. 29.

The chapter's goal is to empower a growing base of engaged users by connecting the Alaska surfing community and promoting active and responsible use of the coastline; educating members and others about the conservation issues affecting the coastline of Alaska; and introducing opportunities for responsible use of the coastline through wave-riding.

The Surfrider Foundation is an international nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, according to the foundation's website. The nearest chapter is in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The chapter's next meeting will be in mid-December. For more information, visit SurfAlaska's Facebook page.
