The Lady Mariner volleyball team ended its 2011 season at Regions. Although not advancing to State playoffs, the team played their highlights of the season in the two Region matches against Kodiak and Skyview, losing to both. Kodiak later placed second in the tournament behind Palmer.

The Mariners' defense received good practice during Thursday's game against Kodiak.

"We were playing aggressively but couldn't convert the defense into points enough of the time to win the games. Offensively we were not as aggressive as we needed to be and played the ball safely many times — giving up opportunities to end the rally," said Head Coach Beth Trowbridge.

On Friday, the girls faced Kenai Peninsula rival Skyview in four close matches. The team's goals of decreasing blocking and serving errors were achieved.

"Skyview played tough and we rose to the challenge. We had very few service errors and only two blocking errors," said Trowbridge.

The team's seniors stepped up to the plate during their final tournament.

"I got great leadership out of my three seniors on the court, Brooke (De Vaney), Lauren (Cashman) and Monica (Davis) who stayed focused and encouraged their teammates," said Trowbridge.

And individual achievements were made. De Vaney and Cashman were selected to the All-Conference Second Team, and Cayenna Anderson was selected to the All-Conference Good Sport Team.

"I think we had a great season, especially if we were to gauge our success on how much we improved both individually and as a team. The girls grew together as a team and worked hard until the very end — always looking to improve," said Trowbridge.
