Homer painter Steve Collins received Bunnell Street Arts Center's $1,500 Alex Combs Award to study figurative painting. Collins, who has done several solo and group shows, has become known in Alaska for his luminous figurative paintings. The award will advance his studies in figure painting and portraiture. Collins will attend a 10-day workshop at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle to study multi-figure composition and expressive portraiture. All award monies support his tuition and travel.

The Alex Combs Award honors the late Halibut Cove artist and teacher, and presents funds exclusively for artists to attend workshops in painting or sculpture. It is a competitive grant administered by Bunnell Street Arts Center and open to adult Alaska artists once annually, with an Oct. 1 deadline.
