Game on!

Hockey season is here and Homer High School, which will play a junior varsity schedule, opened with a 10-1 win over Kenai in Kenai on Saturday.

Brady Boone had two goals and two assists, while Terry Shroyer and Ivan Bucher each scored a pair of goals. Travis Brown added a goal and an assist.

Bryan Smith stopped 12 shots in goal for the Mariners, who take a new coach in Keith Nelson and a roster of 15 players into the 2002-2003 season.

Hockey fund-raiser begins

The Homer High School hockey team must travel to Soldotna and Kenai just to practice and likewise travels north to play host to its "home" games. Because of the demanding travel schedule, the team is offering a holiday decorations sale in an effort to raise the $4,500 it needs to keep playing. The team offers a variety of seasonal wreaths and garlands, ranging in price from $28 to $70.
