The Homer High School wrestling team pulled off a second-place finish at the Ninilchik Wrestling Invitational on Saturday, scoring 49 team points with just four wrestlers competing.
"That was just a great surprise," said coach Chris Perk. "It wasn't even a goal of mine. But they just drilled the stuff we worked on this week."
Picking up where he left off last season, Adam Hediger won three matches by technical fall to win the 171-pound class.
Perk was particularly pleased with the showing of Jared Weaver, who won two matches wrestling in the heavyweight division.
Jim Pollack, wrestling at 189, also won a pair of matches.
Perk said he expects his roster to begin to beef up as more members of the team make their weight classes and compile the necessary 10 practices.
If all goes well, Homer will double its roster for a pair of tri-meets in the Matanuska and Susitna valleys this weekend.
