The Lady Mariner volleyball team finished the regular season against some of their toughest competitors, yet came out on top with team goals. The team lost to Wasilla on Friday 17-25, 17-25, 12-25, and again to Grace Christian 21-25, 20-25, 18-25 on Saturday, finishing third overall in the South.

"Both teams were a challenge as both are aggressive teams that run a fast offense," said Head Volleyball Coach Beth Trowbridge.

Wasilla was a band of hard hitters and solid jump servers who tested Homer's serve receive and prevented them from being effective on the offense.

"We had trouble reading the Wasilla attackers and keeping up with their quick offense," said Trowbridge.

On Saturday, the girls faced Grace Christian who is the top team in the conference, and although the Lady Mariners lost, they showed sportsmanship and dedication.

"It was very exciting and full of long rallies and intense play. It was a match of some individual bests which contributed to the high level of play against a very aggressive and skilled Grace," said Trowbridge.

Homer had a team serve-receive of 86 percent, a season high, and 43 digs for the Grace Christian game.

For the weekend, the team had an overall total of six solo blocks, nine assists, and a 91 serving percentage.

During a team lunch last week, the girls set three team goals: no player in the negative kill percentage, three solo blocks and a team serving percentage more that 85 percent.

"The team almost met all of these goals. Players who had been struggling with their consistency had kill percentages well above what they have had over the past two weeks," said Trowbridge.

The team hopes to continue achieving their goals for Regions this weekend at Colony.

Trowbridge said, "We are excited to see if we can put it all together and be an underdog. We have the talent and we are hoping that we can find our 'zone' where everyone is performing at their personal best."
