Rocket mass heater workshop this weekend

A workshop on rocket mass heaters, including theory and hands-on opportunities, will be held Friday-Sunday at Nomad Shelters Yurt Village. It is sponsored by Ionia Inc., a nonprofit organization from a macrobiotic community of the same name near Kasilof.

The Friday session focuses on theory from 6-8:30 p.m. The Saturday and Sunday sessions are from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and include working with local materials as participants learn how to build a low-cost, efficient wood burning system that can lower the amount of fuel used and increase comfort. Do-it-yourselfers will create their own mass bench, known as a "people's masonry stove," shaped organically according to the particular space and inspiration of the builder.

Cost of the workshop is $250, with a sliding scale available. Preregistration is preferred. Email Lasse Holmes at canyonbrewer@yahoo.com or call 235-1355.

The following weekend, Nov. 12-13, there will be a rocket mass heater burn chamber workshop for people familiar with mass bench construction who want hands-on experience building and firing the rocket burn chamber and ash pit.
