Democrat Bill Sheffield easily defeats Republican Tom Fink, Libertarian Dick Randolph, and Alaska Independent Joe Vogler to win the governor's race.

The halibut "share" system will likely be adopted, strongly affecting small boat fishermen as well as schooners from Southeast Alaska and Seattle. Under the system, fishermen would have a specific amount of fish to catch every year.
