Group supports HVFD volunteers

With its second annual fundraiser quickly approaching on Oct 26, the Members Association (MA) of the Homer Volunteer Fire Department would like to take the chance to explain its core functions and distinguish the role it plays independent of the City of Homer.

The city currently employs five full-time employees at the department. Outside of the work accomplished by these dedicated individuals, a legion of volunteers contributes to provide emergency fire and medical support 24 hours a day. If a 911 emergency is dispatched in the middle of the night, the citizens of Homer can be assured that there will be volunteer(s) at the scene. These volunteers are a vital resource for the community and receive little recompense for their service.

While the city maintains the facilities, apparatus and provides some support in the volunteers expenses, the volunteer is largely motivated through civil duty alone.

The MAs role is to support the volunteer in their service; through fitness programs, expense reimbursement and team-building events. We at the MA feel these programs are paramount to the morale, well-being and fulfillment of our volunteers.

If you feel the MA is doing a valuable service for our volunteers, we welcome you to attend our fundraiser on Oct. 26 at the Elks Lodge from 6-9 p.m. There will be a lasagna dinner with an open bar to be followed by a silent and live auction. If you are unable to attend and would like to still contribute, donations are accepted at the front office of the Fire Department during regular business hours.
