The ironworkers at the Islands and Ocean Visitors Center bring home the final girder in a topping-out ceremony that has been a tradition for builders dating back to pre-medieval Europe. With a live tree attached to the final topping beam, Old World builders performed the ceremony to bring good luck and good health. The ironworkers who did the girder work at the Islands and Ocean site on the Sterling Highway were: Jacko Niemi, Royce Bailey of Homer, Steve Long, Rob Haynes, Andy Pullen, Pat Duggan, John Jones, Kim Jones and Dave Bengston.
