Six charged with domestic violence crimes in 10 days

By Michael Armstrong
Staff Writer

In a proclamation declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Homer Mayor Pro Tempore Dennis Novak urged citizens "to observe this month by becoming aware of the tragedy of domestic violence."

Charges filed in court this month show the range of domestic violence incidents. Between Oct. 5 and 15, Homer Police and Alaska State Troopers charged six people with domestic-violence related crimes, including one man charged in two separate incidents.

The incidents included alleged assaults of husbands beating wives, boyfriends hitting girlfriends and girlfriends attacking girlfriends.

Charged were:

n Curt L. Cole, 26, three counts of fourth-degree assault, domestic violence; driving under the influence. According to a criminal complaint, at about 3:20 a.m. Oct. 9, a man told police he saw Cole punch a woman in the face, knock her to the ground and kick her in a field near Ben Walters Lane and East End Road. When the man drove up, the woman ran to his car asking for help. Cole came up to the car, punched the man in the face and told him to get lost. In a second incident at about 12:45 a.m. Oct. 15, Cole allegedly confronted the woman, a relative of his, at the Alibi Bar and told her he was going to kill her mother and her mother's boyfriend and then kill himself. When police caught up with Cole while he was driving his truck, they also allege he was drunk.

• Reed Kaiser, 32, driving under the influence, third-degree criminal mischief, both felonies, fourth-degree assault, domestic violence, driving while license revoked. Alaska State Troopers allege finding Kaiser in his car near his Clam Gulch home after a neighbor reported a disturbance. Troopers allege Kaiser and his girlfriend were arguing in the car after drinking and that he slammed on his brakes, causing her to hit her head on the dashboard. The couple then argued at home and Kaiser broke a window and kicked in a door, troopers said. The woman denied that Kaiser hit her and Kaiser claimed he slammed his brakes after missing a turn. Troopers said Kaiser had a .155 breath-alcohol level and two prior DUI convictions.

• Kerry L. Aglietti, 38, first-degree burglary, a felony, fourth-degree assault, domestic violence. In charging documents, police allege at about 7 a.m. Oct. 12, Aglietti came uninvited into an apartment where her girlfriend was staying, dragged her out of bed, ripped most of her clothes off, hit her in the face and threw her across the room. The woman had to borrow clothes to wear to the police station to report the incident.

• Evdoksia N. Lasiter, 32, violating a domestic violence protective order, fifth-degree criminal mischief. Troopers allege that a relative of Lasiter had a restraining order granted against her prohibiting her from being within 500 feet of the man's home. Troopers said about 10:20 p.m. Lasiter went to the man's home and tried to get friends of the man staying there to let her in. When they refused to let her in, she forced the door open and went inside to get clothes.

• Charles M. Smyth, 18, interfering with a domestic violence report, fourth-degree criminal mischief. Homer police allege that about 6:25 p.m. Oct. 12, a woman related to Smyth said she got into an argument with Smyth. When she tried to call police, he grabbed her cellular phone and broke it in half. The woman then went to a neighbor's home and called police.

• Richard M. Zielinski, 20, first-degree criminal trespass, domestic violence. In charging documents, police allege a man related to Zielinski asked him to leave his home. When Zielinski refused, he called police and asked them to issue Zielinski a trespass notice. Zielinski still refused to leave after police gave him a notice and asked him to leave, so police arrested him.
