After the Bell kids march to Open House

Happy, well-fed kids with time to have fun, learn skills, and get help with their homework are becoming more commonplace on the Kenai Peninsula.

The results of the very successful After the Bell program, which began nearly three years ago in cooperation with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula and funded by a grant from 21st Century Community Learning Center.

According to Tammy Hanley, Club House Director for the Redoubt Elementary After the Bell program, that grant will be running out in the near future, "We're at the end of the three and half years of that grant, so in the next year, our funding will be finished, so right now we are having a Fun Raiser to let people know that we will be needing new funds to continue the program in the future," said Hanley at an After the Bell open house last week at Soldotna Middle School.

"I love it when kids want to stay after school and when their parents come early to pick them up and they ask to stay a little longer so they can get their home work totally finished. Teachers have said that having kids that have their homework completed lets them get more teaching done and they don't have to remediate, and parents have told us that not having to deal with homework at home means more family time.

The kids get a nutritional snack and a chance to run off some energy as well as an environment where there are small groups where they can do hands on activities that enrich their minds and get their homework done," said Hanley.

Over 100 smiling kids and adults of all ages marched with signs of support from Redoubt Elementary School along Redoubt Avenue to Kobuk Street and back to Soldotna Middle School last week in support of the After the Bell program and to invite the community to an open house and spaghetti feed. In addition to the program at Redoubt Elementary, there are After the Bell programs at Soldotna Elementary, Soldotna Middle School, Soldotna and Skyview High Schools.
