Governor to speak at Wednesday meeting

Gov. Sean Parnell

Gov. Sean Parnell will join South Peninsula Haven House in a discussion on domestic violence and sexual assault at "Voices Over Violence: the Dialogue Continues," the second of two public meetings on these subjects sponsored by Haven House. The meeting will take place at Mariner Theatre at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Katie TePas, the governor's domestic violence and sexual assault initiatives coordinator, has been in communication with Jessica Lawmaster, Haven House executive director, about community concerns that arose after the Sept. 8 incident in which a boy was allegedly sexually assaulted at an East End Road teen drinking party, said Sharon Leighow, Parnell's spokesperson. Lawmaster had invited the governor to speak, and Parnell agreed to visit.

"He will make some comments and listen, and provide support to the community and encourage the community to speak out against domestic violence, sexual assault and child sexual abuse," Leighow said. "This is an issue that's very important to him."

Through his Choose Respect initiative, Parnell has pledged to take every step necessary to stop the epidemic of domestic violence, sexual assault and child sexual abuse in Alaska, the governor said in a letter to Alaskans.
