Student contest

Homer Electric Association is sponsoring its second annual Energy Efficiency and Conservation Student Contest for grades three through eight. Students are invited to enhance their skills in science, writing and technology by entering the contest held in conjunction with HEA's 2011 Energy and Conservation fairs in November. Students are asked to answer a grade-specific question on how they reduce, reuse or recycle and make efficient use of electric energy in the form of a poem, essay, news article and television commercial. The contest is open to all students in the HEA service areas. Two separate contests will be held, one for the south service area and one for the north service area. Finalists will be expected to participate in the fairs hosted in Kenai and Homer in November. Deadline for entries is Oct. 24. For information, contact Tanya Lautaret, (907) 283-2305. Visit www.homerelectric.com for contest rules, guidelines, prizes and an entry form.

YOUNG ACTOR NEEDED FOR FEATURE FILM

Young actors are encouraged to apply for the role of a 7-year-old girl in "Calling Fox," the next feature film to be produced by Brian Smith Productions of Homer. Smith defined the character as being "wise beyond her years." He is looking for someone with a quiet, complex look, good eyes, facials, with a lot going on and an ability to not get bored doing take after take of the same action. "A great 'stage mom' handy and available would be a plus," said Smith. The film is a metaphysical mystery and a road picture. It will film in the Homer area during summer and fall 2012. The story revolves around a young girl who is mute and has apparently been abandoned at a roadhouse; however, all may not be as it seems. Similar to Smith's recently filmed "Puffin Bay," the film is intended for DVD and cable market, with a premiere in Homer in early 2013. Dick Sanders, one of the stars in "Puffin Bay" will have a role in the film. There are eight other actor slots wide open. "Anyone and everyone, all ages and ethnicities are encouraged to apply," said Smith. Send a short biography and one or two photos to sojourn50@alaska.net. Scripts are available via email.
