Homer boys place second, girls, third, at Skyview swim meet

Despite a number of best times achieved, winter's first snowflakes remained the highlight of the Skyview Invite last weekend. As the snow fell outside, the Mariner swim team swam some of their best inside, against SoHi, Skyview, Seward and Kenai.

"It was a quick meet and was over before we knew it, but the energy and excitement the kids had lasted all day," said Head Swim Coach Rebecca Hardy.

The boys 400M freestyle relay took first place at the meet, and the girls medley relay saw a second place finish.

Manuel Spigno lead the team with best times. Spigno dropped .08 of a second in the 50M freestyle, placing him third. His previous best time in that event was at the Kenai Invite two weeks ago, tying fellow swim mate Kaveh Anderson.

"I am excited for this team, they are continually improving. They are bringing what they learn in practice to the pool. They are constantly asking how they can improve and recognizing were they need extra work," said Hardy.

Seasoned Kachemak Swim Club swimmer and greenhorn on the Mariner squad, Cyrus Cowan, made a goal to break one minute in the 100M freesyle, and did with a best time of 59.77 seconds, putting him in second at the meet.

As the days count down toward the end of the season, Hardy, along with assistant coaches John Roedl and Donna McNulty, is starting to focus the team on the strokes that they will be swimming at Regions.

"October has arrived and we have just a few more meets to get the team dialed in," said Hardy.

Getting the team dialed in requires commitment in the pool as well as out of the pool. Hardy, Roedl and McNulty have been emphasising nutritional diets in addition to techniques and conditioning, and they have seen positive reactions to their lessons.

"I mean, they are kids, so I know that things like pizza and pop are big temptations," said Hardy. "When they come up to me with so much enthusiasm over resisting pop, I am reminded of their great amount of self discipline and dedication."

The pizza-less and pop-less team has been working on turns and walls this week in preparation for the Seward Invite this weekend. The Mariner dive team took last weekend off from official competition and will be competing at the Seward Invite also. Two more meets remain before Regions, to be held at the team's home pool at Homer High.
