Lady Mariners take third place on home court

The Lady Mariners took third place in last weekend's Peninsula Challenge tournament held in Homer. Seven teams participated in this two-day tourney. The Mariners finished Friday's round robin play with an 8-4 record, giving them the third seed coming into Saturday's single elimination games. With wins over Kenai (25-10), (25-16) and Seward (25-18) (25-23) on Saturday, the Lady Ms were able to take third place.

The Mariners had their best offensive showing last weekend with a total of 136 kills and 65 errors. The 17 percent kill efficiency was the highest for the team this season. Leading the way offensively was all-tournament selection Zoia Basargin with 46 kills. Cayenna Anderson and Caroline Decreft also took home all-tournament medals for their work.

Hailey Oliver led the defensive push with seven solo blocks and one block assist. Alicia Isenhour and Basargin also contributed 14 blocks.

"Overall the varsity played really well and put to use many of the kills they have developed over the season. The aggressive play that was required of them was back and they played each team with intensity and focus. They cut down on errors and communicated effectively," said Coach Beth Trowbridge on her team's play.

This weekend, the Mariners travel to Anchorage where they will be taking part in a tournament held Grace Christian School.

Cayenna Anderson led the team with 16 aces.

Miranda Beach and Zoia Basargin each pitched in 15 aces. Hope Hudson and Alicia Isenhour each had 12 aces. Miranda Beach served up 58 balls, 54 of which earned points.

Defensively, Haley Oliver led the blocking with 7 solos and 1 assist,

followed by Alicia Isenhour with 6 solos and 1 assist. Zoia Basargin had

5 solos and 2 assists. Cayenna Anderson had 42 digs followed by Maggie Koplin with 31, Zoia Basargin with 28, Miranda Beach with 25, Caroline Decreeft with 23 and Hope Hudson with 19. Larsen Fellows and Alicia Isenhour added to the defensive efforts with 9 digs a piece

Nome defeated Skyview for first place 25-20 and 25-22. Homer defeated Seward for third place, 25-18 and 25-23.
