Homer Alaska - Anchor Point -

Story last updated at 9:28 PM on Wednesday, October 1, 2008

Betsy Fritz celebrates 95th birthday with friends

What a beautiful weekend it was -- a great opportunity to play catch-up on chores. It was a fabulous day for the Homer Mariners to play their homecoming game and have a celebration of dance with their win over Skyview. Congratulations to the Homer Mariners. It was a great game.

With several Anchor Point and Homer friends, Betsy Fritz celebrated her 95th birthday with cake and punch in her Anchor Point home Sept. 20. Her niece, Barbara (Fritz) Shaff, from Los Angeles, Calif., is here for a week's visit. Visiting friends included Clif and Cheryl Shafer, Carol Inman, Lora Craig, Roxie Schade, Barbara Dahl, Chevonne Clark and daughter, Katie; Janet Mullen, and Nancy and Neil Sawyer

Have a great weekend and be safe.

Chamber of Commerce

Membership renewals are starting. The chamber is hoping to get all renewals before the end of the year. There also are some board of director seats that are coming open.

Anchor Point Senior Center

Tonight's dinner will be fried chicken and all the fixings. The salad bar opens at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Bingo is a great night of fun. Bingo is at 7 p.m. every Friday, and the public is invited. Dan Cornelius was the lucky winner of the center's drawing for a beautiful Alaska gold nugget watch. The center's community breakfast will be Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon. The center's annual holiday bazaar will be from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov 1. Space will be available for $20; tables are available for rent at $15 each. Anyone interested in participating in the bazaar is asked to call the senior center at 235-7786. This is a first-come, first-served event and reservations for space are already coming in. Last year there were more than 40 booths and the event was a huge success.

Attention, homeschoolers

There is interest in forming a group for getting together for sports. Once formed, the group may gather at a local gym for sporting activities for exercise and fun. Homeschoolers are especially targeted, but all children will be welcome.

For more information or to sign up, please call Melissa Martin at 235-7842.

SVT Health Center

Clinic hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

VFW Post 10221

Members and their guests are welcome at all events. Karaoke with Tom starts at 9 p.m. Saturday. Dollar taco night is from 5-7p.m. Monday. The Ladies Auxiliary is starting its winter steak nights -- the first will be Oct 18. There will be only one steak night a month. The monthly fish fry will be Oct. 26.

Students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades who are interested in participating in the VFW's Voice of Democracy program and students in seventh, eighth and ninth grades who are interested in the VFW's Patriots Pen Essay contest are asked to call Jennifer at 235-2556. The Ladies Auxiliary has handed out applications for both of these programs to area schools.
