Best Beginnings is accepting proposals for grants to launch new local Imagination Libraries and expand existing ones. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. Oct. 17. The Kachemak Bay Birders' First Saturday birding hike will be down the trail to Beluga Slough on Saturday. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Islands and Ocean parking lot. This trip is co-sponsored by the Kachemak Bay Birders and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. The leader will be Michael Craig; for more information, give him a call at 235-0631. Friends of the Homer Public Library host a forum for Alaskans to tell their stories from the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake. Presenters include Daisy Lee Bitter, Val McLay, Larry Martin, Neil McArthur, Nadine Pence and more. The event is 6 p.m. today at the Homer Public Library. The Homer Community Special Olympics Team Bowling Fundraiser is Oct. 15 at Kachemak Bowl. Special Olympics seeks four-person teams from the community to register by Oct. 7. Three-person teams also are welcome and will be matched with a Special Olympics athlete. Prizes will be awarded for highest team score and the most money raised. The money raised in this fundraiser stays in Homer and helps pay the cost of sending bowlers to the state tournament in Anchorage in November, and to support year-round sports training.
