Burn basket, burn

The Burning Basket of Remembrance and Unburdening goes up in flames on Sunday night at Mariner Park on the Homer Spit. Participants were asked to leave mementos in the basket of burdens they wanted lifted. People also could sign a large paper origami peace crane to put in the basket.

Mavis Muller, and Eva Saulitis, right, weave the basket last week. Volunteer artists collected material and helped make the basket. Muller, a Homer artist known for her intricate baskets, organized the event.

After the burn, Muller and others collected material, such as melted glass and scorched metal, to use in future sculptures.
