The West Spectacular Volleyball Tournament was held last weekend. This tournament featured a 22 team pool play on Saturday to decide the bracket for the following day.

During Saturday's action, the Lady Mariners dropped all three games in losses to Chugiak, Palmer and East.

These defeats put the Ms in sixth place in their pool and qualified them to play in Sunday's Nickel Bracket.

The Nickel Bracket had the Mariners facing elimination against Nome after losing two sets to Mount Edgecumbe.

After winning the first game, Homer went on to lose the next two in exciting conditions.

With the score tied 11-11 in the third game to 15, Nome rallied, scoring the next four points and eliminating the Mariners. The scores were 25-23, 16-25 and 11-15

"It was a disappointment." said Coach Beth Trowbridge.

"We had some service errors at key times in game 3 and lost some confidence with our attack, but we look forward to seeing them again this coming weekend for a re-match."

Although the Mariners couldn't find much success last weekend, they improved as a team, putting up some impressive numbers. They served a team high 94 percent with 46 aces, half of which came from seniors Miranda Beach and Hannah Larue.

"Our goals were to play hard and see what we could do against bigger and stronger teams and play teams that we don't get to see in our season. This was a huge tournament with 22 teams and it is exciting and inspirational to be around that much volleyball and watch and learn from high quality play," said Trowbridge after the tournament.

The offensive output was lead by Caroline DeCreeft and Larson Fellows who had 37 and 26 assists respectively.

Hope Hudson had nine assists in the first two games. She was sidelined the rest of the tournament due to a thumb injury, but is looking to make a comeback as the Mariners setter this week.

Blockers combined for 13 solo blocks and four block assists led by Homer's All-Tournament player Zoia Basargin with four solos and one assist defensively.

Maggie Koplin led the floor defense with 30 digs, followed by DeCreeft's 20.

"We played hard and rose to the competition," said Trowbridge.

"We played better than we had earlier in the week and cut down on errors. Serving was very good and probably our strongest improvement for the weekend," said Trowbridge.

Game scores from the tournament:
