Walter Art McDowell

March 18, 1932 - Sept. 24, 2012

Walter Art McDowell, 80, passed away Sept. 24, 2012, at his home in Homer. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at the Independent Baptist Church, with a potluck to follow. For more information, call Wilma at 235-7309.

He was born in South Dansville, N.Y. on March 18, 1932.

In 1951, Art came to Alaska with his Uncle Carl Williams and worked for him at Lake Iliamna. In December 1952, he went into the U.S. Army serving in Korea. After serving in the military he returned to New York, going to work at Foster Wheeler as a welder where he worked for 26 years.

After the death of his wife in 1987 he returned to Alaska where he has lived since. In the 25 years he has lived in Homer he has made many friends and will be missed very much.

He is survived by his special friend Wilma Williams. He also is survived by his sisters Lily Crane, Donna Fairbrother and her husband Glenn; brother DeWitt McDowell; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, David and William McDowell; three sisters, Mary Fox, Bonny Miller and Carol Bartell; and parents David and Jennie McDowell.
