Homer Alaska - Letters -

Story last updated at 8:32 PM on Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Veterans' picnic enjoyed by all

The Kenai Peninsula Veterans Affairs Volunteer Services would like to thank the American Legion Auxiliary in Homer for organizing the Homer Area Veterans Family Picnic.

The day started out a little rainy, but the rain stopped and everybody that attended had a good time. We registered 98 people throughout the afternoon.

We would like to thank the people who helped make/cook and serve the food; the Girls Scouts and their leader who opened the picnic with a patriotic Flag Presentation and helped with the children's games; S.A.L for putting up the tent to keep the rain off band members and others who helped throughout the day.

Thank you. We could not have done it without the following monetary donations: American Legion Post 16 and Unit 16, Anchor Point VFW, Kachemak Bay Marines; and food donations from McNeil Canyon Meats, Kachemak Grocery, Save-U-More and Safeway.

We had excellent entertainment Dudley Abbott and Dan Grant, Sunshine Sjoeberg and her band "Relatively Famous" and Andre Drake's "8 Mile Band." These folks donated their talent and time. Thank you, you were awesome.

Door prizes were donated by: Petro Marine, Pudgy's Grocery, Peninsula Air Metals, Bald Mountain Air, Homer Chamber of Commerce, Homer Electric, NAPA, Star Car Wash, Captain Pattie's, Starvin Marvin's Pizza, The Grog Shop, Homer Bookstore and several auxiliary members; children's prizes were donated by the American Legion Auxiliary.

A representative from the Kenai Medical Clinic, Barbara Hagie, was present to answer veterans' questions and she also left her business cards and several informative booklets at the American Legion Post.

If you didn't make it to the picnic this year, we look forward to seeing you next year.

Darlene Sheldon, Lois Bentler, Bill McDaniels, Peggy Patton, Nora Anderson and Christie Hill,

chairmen
