Drawing close to the final day of the 2010 Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby — Sept. 30 — Jamie Olvera of Fairbanks continues to maintain her lead with a 277.6-pound halibut caught Aug. 28. Olvera hooked into the monster while fishing with North Country Halibut Charters Capt. Ben Martin aboard the Fringe Benefit.

"The countdown is upon is," said Paula Frisinger, coordinator of this year's derby.

This year's current leading fish is a lighter version of last year's 354.6-pound winner. Tom Youngblood of Homer landed the monster early in the 2009 derby — June 26 — while fishing with In-2-Fishin Charters Capt. Ron Hurley aboard the Sweet T. When all was said and done and the last fish in the derby was caught, Youngblood took home a first-place prize of $40,440.

Standings for the month of September are:

• First place ($1,000): Alan Eischens of Wasilla with a 174.2-pound halibut caught Sept. 7 while fishing on Mini Bandit, a private boat;

• Second place ($750): Susan Williamson of Homer with a 158.2-pound halibut caught Sept. 16 while fishing with Alaska Premier Fishing Capt. Travis Larson aboard the Venturess;

• Third place ($500): Robert Culp of Lindale, Ga., with a 155-pound halibut caught Sept. 15 while fishing with Bob's Trophy Charters Capt. Josh Brooks aboard the Huntress;

• Fourth place ($250): Pan Hanshaw of Homer with a 152-pound halibut caught Sept. 5 while fishing with Capt. Willie Eban aboard Real Fun Sr., a private boat.

Williamson also has the lead in the lady angler competition. Lady anglers — specifically Lori Jarvis of Eagle River — also have caught the largest tagged fish. Jarvis reeled in a halibut with a $10,000 tag Sept. 6 while fishing with Nautilus Charters Capt. Lloyd Gailey aboard the Knot Yet. The tag was sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank.

Other tagged fish caught this month include:

• $1,000 tag: Jonathan Morris of The Woodlands, Texas, caught Sept. 6, while fishing with Captain B's Alaskan C's Adventures Capt. Bryan Bondioli aboard the Ashtikan, tag sponsored by Bob's Trophy Charters;

• $1,000 tag: Danielle Gagmen of Fritz Creek, caught Sept. 14, while fishing with Capt. Scott's Sportfishing Capt. Scott Glosser aboard the Mako, tag sponsored by Beluga Lake Lodge;

• $500 tag: Marshall Smith of Woodlands, Texas, caught Sept. 6, while fishing with Captain Scott's Sportfishing Capt. Scott Glosser aboard the Mako, tag sponsored by Sea Lion Cove;

• $500 tag: Robert Breshears of Burney, Calif., caught Sept. 10 while fishing with Captain Scott's Sportfishing Capt. Scott Glosser aboard the Mako; tag sponsored by Alaskan Cottages.

Although 17 tagged halibut have been caught during this year's derby, only 12 of the anglers had derby tickets. That is a good reminder that between now and the end of the derby, purchasing a derby ticket might prove to be a good decision.
