Mariner Swim Coach Rebecca Hardy began the season with reservations about her novice team.

"We have a young team, but they are quickly improving, learning and gaining confidence — all qualities of our veteran swimmers," said Hardy.

She and Dive Coach Harmon Hall will spend countless hours this season at the Kate Kuhns Aquatic Center instructing, critiquing and mentoring their young swimmers and divers into statebound hopefuls.

For Hardy, her team, which is heavy with freshmen, is joined with a few first-year upper classmen swimmers, two of whom received the most high-fives last weekend at the Kenai Invite.

"We were watching their lanes cheering them on. When they both made it to the end we all looked up at the time board and couldn't believe they tied," said Hardy.

Kaveh Anderson and Manu Spigno, both first-year swimmers, tied in the 50M freestyle event with a time of 30.44, a phenomenon that doesn't happen often in competitive swimming, said Hardy.

"It was just lovely to watch that, especially since it was the first meet for both of them. I am so proud," said Hardy.

Hall's first-year divers also are making waves.

Ian Hall has been the only freshman representing Homer in the dive events. Hall placed 10th at Kenai with a score of 129.65.

"The freshmen boys are just blowing me away with how much they are learning," said Hall. "We are going to have a strong dive team for the next four years."

The dive team swept away the only first place holding for Homer this weekend. Brian Rowe scored 201.30 with his six dives, earning him first place, the highest score Rowe has received in a six-dive meet.

Jasmine Lewis, in her second year of diving, took second place with a score of 161.5.

"The kids are working harder and listening. I am taking videos of them with my iPad and using that to do some critiquing. It is all about repetition and staying focused," said Hall.

The upperclassmen swimming boys held their own at Kenai. James Nagle took second in the 100M butterfly event. Nagle, along with his brother Mark, Cyrus Cowan and Greg Smith also took second in the 400M freestyle relay.

This weekend, the swim team will travel to Soldotna. The dive team will not be competing because Soldotna does not have a diving event. Instead, Hall will be training his divers for the first 11-dive meet for the season, to be held in Chugiak the following weekend.

"Anchorage will be a good lesson for us. We are going to see the big guns up there," said Hall.

The Bartlett Invite also will feature the pentathlon, where each swimmer swims five events: fly, back, breast, free, IM and all scores and times are combined.

"I am excited to see them swim the pentathlon. It's always a fun meet for the swimmers, coaches and spectators," Hardy said.
