Spikers fall to Skyview

The Homer High School volleyball team went up the road and fell 3-0 to Skyview in a Region III match on Friday.

The Panthers played a solid defensive game as they handed the Mariners a 15-8, 15-7, 15-2 loss.

Chelsea Ward led the Mariners offensively with 13 kills. She added 10 digs and five solo blocks.

Holly McCune was the Mariners defensive backbone, digging out 19 balls to go along with her six kills. Sara Thompson added 13 digs.

The Mariners will have a shot at redemption when the Panthers visit Homer on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. for homecoming.

Borgman makes semis

Homer's Stacey Borgman and her partner Mary Obidinski took second in their repechage on Wednesday to advance to Friday's semifinals in the women's lightweight double sculls at the World Championships of rowing in Seville, Spain.

The American pair finished 1.76 seconds behind a strong Canadian team.

In their preliminary heat earlier in the week, Borgman and Obidinski took third. The top three teams from each heat advance.

Golfers will tee it up

The Homer Golf Association will host its Harvest Tournament on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. with registration and closest-to-the-pin and long-ball competitions.

The best-ball scramble will kick off with a shotgun start at 11 a.m.
