Boroughs brings runners to Homer

Homer High School cross country runners warmed up for the last regular-season weekend with a 3-kilometer run at the Anchorage Christian School Class Challenge last Friday before taking on a dusty 5-k Palmer Invitational course Saturday.

In the junior/senior race at ACS Friday, Dan Adickes claimed fifth place in 10 minutes, 45.46 seconds. Sophomore Pedro Ochoa took eighth in the freshman/sophomore race with a 10:52.9, followed soon after by ninth-place Josh VanTrease in 10:54.4.

Mariah Turner took 28th in the junior/senior girls race in 14:25.7. Valerie Mastolier took 30th in 14:44.1.

Freshman Pam Jantzi paced the freshman/sophomore girls with a 15th place finish in 13:27.3. Cassidy Soistman took 16th in 13:30.2.

At the big meet in Palmer Saturday, Soistman placed 48th in the girls varsity race with a time of 20:27.91. Jantzi ran a 22:02.43; Rebbecca Seneff, 22:13.83; Mastolier, 22:27.92; and Mattea Peters, 24.07.13.

Turner, Sakota Mitchell and Morgan Fuller competed in the girls junior varsity race.

Adickes paced the Mariner boys varisity team with a 17:45.84, 58th-place finish. VanTrease ran an 18:04.670; Connor McCarron ran 18:51.30; Jake Worsfold 19:00.78; Brandon Beachy 19:01.77 and John Walsworth 20:23.14.

Ochoa ran the course in 18:34.98, the third-fastest time overall for the Mariner boys, in the junior varsity race. Clem Tillion, Riley Chesser, Connor Browne, Alex Jantzi and Riley Alston also ran.

Three Mariner boys are injured this week, but Head Coach Bill Steyer is still hopeful about the last three weeks of the season.

Homer holds the borough championship meet Saturday. It starts at 12:30 p.m. at the Lookout Mountain Trails.
