Projects get federal support

The Nanwalek-Port Graham airport project received a $950,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation through the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Alaska's congressional delegation announced last week. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources also received a $988,000 Coastal Impact Assistance Program grant from the U.S. Department of Interior to remove an estimated 400,000 pounds of commercial fishing gear and marine debris from Alaska beaches.

Funding for lower Kenai Peninsula harbor projects also passed the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, announced last week. The fiscal year 2012 appropriation bill includes $453,000 for the Homer Harbor and $420,000 for the Ninilchik Harbor. The bill also includes $39 million for U.S. Coast Guard ice breakers. At Monday's Homer City Council meeting, council member Kevin Hogan said if the Coast Guard gets new ice breaker cutters, Homer should try to have an ice breaker homeported here.

The appropriations bill next goes to the U.S. Senate floor for consideration.
