Bathtub racers clean up in Nome
About 30 racers turned out for the annual Great Bathtub Race down Nome's Front Street recently, jockeying for first place as they spilled down the hill toward the finish.

The Arctic Lighterage team, which has several trophies to its credit, won again. Radio KNOM's "Black Widowmaker" finished in second, followed by the Laughing Women's floral and lavendar tub piloted by a tie-dyed crew.

Arctic Lighterage's Harold O'Connor said the secret to his team's clean wins is simple: "Push hard and not give up," he said. "KNOM gave us a bit of a run, but we just smoked them."

Racers wore shower caps and towels, and added to the excitement by squirting each other with high-powered water guns and hurling water balloons at each other and the crowd.

Several tubs threw wheels during the event, which also saw a few multi-tub pile-ups, but no one was injured, organizers said.
