Jeff Van Landingham, left, of Eagle River is September's leader in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby with a 202.6-pound fish caught Sept. 4, while fishing with Capt. Jeff Cundiff, right, of Good Time Charters aboard the Tillie Mae.

If Chad Aldridge of Sterling can stay ahead of the competition through the end of the month, his pockets might be as full as the freezer holding his 350.8 pounds of halibut.

Aldridge reeled in his monstrous fish June 19, while fishing with family near Seldovia aboard his own boat, the Seabee.

The 2010 Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby was won by Jamie Olvera of Fairbanks with a 277.6-pound whopper caught Aug. 28, while fishing aboard "Fringe Benefits" with Capt. Ban Martin of North Country Halibut Charters. Olvera's prize: $40,610.

With the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby running through Sept. 30, it's still too soon for Aldridge to start celebrating, however. Less than a week into the derby's final month, one angler landed a fish weighing more than 200 pounds.

September standings:

• First place, $1,000: 202.6-pound halibut caught Sept. 4 by Jeff Van Landingham of Eagle River while fishing with Capt. Jeff Cundiff of Good Time Charters aboard the Tillie Mae;

• Second place, $750: 92.2-pound halibut caught Sept. 3 by Sharon Chelewski of Grand Junction, Colo., while fishing with Capt. Brett Weaver of Homer Ocean Charters aboard the Diamond Cape;

• Third place, $500: 21.6-pound halibut caught Sept. 3 by Mike Manuel of Anchorage while fishing on a private boat;

• Fourth place, $250: None for the month;

• Land Angler: Chelewski;

• Released fish: None for the month;

• Total released fish for the derby: 52;

• Tagged fish: None for the month.

Anglers are reminded Homer has a two halibut limit per day, per person.

Tickets for the derby, an event sponsored by the Homer Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, are $10 a day or $75 for a 10-day ticket.

The tickets can be purchased at the chamber or many local businesses.
