Tongass trip donors thanked
We at the Homer chapter of Alaska Youth for Environmental Action would like to thank all those who donated to our scholarship fund. We raised a total of $965 towards sending seven local students to the Tongass National Forest. We spent a week there, in Sitka and in Ketchikan, learning about the environment and the people of the forest. We hiked, camped and enjoyed the beautiful area. But not all was fun and games; we also learned much about the changes the forest will be going through in the years to come, and heard the concerns of local stakeholders, including the National Forest Service and local Native corporations and groups.

This trip helped our new group see what can be done by a group of students, and what has been done. Here in Homer, we are working on setting up recycling options in the high school and all over town. This October we are also planning a learning retreat, to which we are hopping up to 30 kids from around the peninsula will come. And none of this would be possible without all the support we have received from the local community, our sponsors and anyone who pledged money to our fund. Thank you all.
