The Mariners swim and dive team prepared for the 2012 season with the Homer triathlon fundraiser. Thirty-three athletes participated in the swim-bike-run triathlon on Saturday to raise money for the Homer team.

"We had fewer kids compete in this event. They treated it as a fundraiser by working at the water stations and other support areas," said Head Swim Coach Rebecca Hardy.

Participants from as far as Eagle River, Anchorage and Girdwood competed in Saturday's event. Jason Lamoreaux of Anchorage came in first place overall with a time of 1:29:06, Amber Stull had the fastest female time at 1:44:29.

Kaveh Anderson had the best Homer High male time at 2:14:36, and Lydia Ardnt had the best Homer High female time at 2:32:04.

This was Hardy's first year organizing the event and was pleased with the turnout.

"I appreciate all the hard work that the parents and other community members such as Thad Gunther, Anita Harry, Laureen Wentz, Becky Ginter, Jaclyn Ardnt, Quinten Ardnt and the Kachemak Swim Club put into this event," said Hardy.

The triathlon fundraiser begins the season for the young swim and dive team. The loss of a number of seniors last season gives the team a new face for 2012.

"We have a young team. I have a lot of freshmen coming up in the ranks and a handful of juniors. There are big shoes to fill without the seniors," said Head Dive Coach Harmon Hall.

The swim team has been fortunate to be able to recruit swimmers from the Kachemak Swim Club, giving the Mariners a strong base on which to build.

"I see that this team has a lot of potential. We have a lot of strong freshmen coming in, some who have a possibility of going to state," said Hardy.

Though still early in the season, the groundwork is already being laid for Regions in October. This weekend's home swim meet will be a regional meet featuring the same teams that will compete at Regions.

"We need 11 dives for Regions and I am trying to prepare our team for this now so they will be ready come Regions time. We can use this upcoming meet to see the competition and see where we need to improve," said Hall.

The dive team started the season with intense training from Texas' Trinity College's Dive Coach Stan Randall. Randall taught a dive clinic at Homer High in early August which was open to all divers in the state. Twelve divers attended the clinic, most of them from Homer High.

"We had the divers set their standards high with Randall so we are working on them meeting their standards," said Hall.

The swim team will have 17 swimmers at Saturday's meet. As the second meet of the season, many of the students are still testing the waters.

"We are still in the growing stages — working on technique, fundamentals and increasing conditioning. I am confident in these kids and I know they will achieve great goals this season," said Hall.
