Grizzlies beat Lady Mariners

The Lady Mariners traveled to Anchorage last Saturday to play volleyball against the Grace Christian Grizzlies in another conference matchup. Homer was overpowered by the hitting abilities of the Grizzlies and lost 3 matches to 0.

Match 3: Homer 9, Grace 25

The Mariners now hold a 1-2 record and are the road once again today to play Anchorage Christian School and then participate in a tournament in Houston on Friday and Saturday.

HMS launches running season

The Homer Middle School Huskies launched the cross-country season Friday by hosting the season's first meet. Participating on the 1.5-mile course were athletes from Soldotna, Nikiski and Kenai middle schools, as well as middle school students from Nikolaevsk School, Aurora Borealis Charter School and, of course, HMS.

"Despite the rainy weather, the Huskies ran a great race with notable performances by the following runners," said Coach Jennifer Booz.

In the boys' race:

• Sixth place: Justin Ellison, 10:31;

• Eighth place: Jared Brant, 10:42.

In the girls' race:

• Fourth place: Lauren Evarts, 11:45;

• Sixth place: Audrey Rosencrans, 11:52;

• Seventh place: Izabelle Hagge, 11:55

• Ninth place: Lauren Kuhns, 12:45;

The next meet will be at Skyview High School at 3 p.m. Friday.

The Huskies busy cross country schedule also has them participating in the Cross Country Running Seward Invitational in Seward on Sept. 14, in Nikiski on Sept. 21 and in the Cross Country Running-Boroughs in Kenai on Sept. 28.
