Mariner volleyball takes third at Nikiski tourney

Staff Report

Homer High School's volleyball team took third place at the Shanyna Pritchard Memorial tournament at Nikiski High School last weekend.

Dillingham defeated Anchorage Christian Schools in the finals of the tournament, held in honor of a former Nikiski volleyball player who died in 2007 at the age of 18.

Homer began the tournament in a pool with ACS and Kenai, playing two games to 25 points with each team on Friday for tournament seeding.

The Ms beat Kenai 25-12, 25-17 and split with ACS 25-16, 17-25 to claim first place in their pool based on total points scored.

ACS was seeded second in that pool with just one fewer point and Kenai third. Nikiski was seeded first in the other pool.

Teams played a single-elimination tournament of best two-out-of-three matches on Saturday.

The Mariners lost a tight set of games (22-25, 22-25) to ACS in the semi-final match, which put them in the third-place match against Nikiski.

Homer won 16-25, 25-18, 15-10 for third. Bethel topped Kenai for fifth place.

Mariners Brooke DeVaney, Monica Davis and Lauren Cashman made the all-tournament team.

Homer varsity and JV squads travel to Cordova this weekend for the Fast Ferry Tournament. The Mariners host Soldotna at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 6.
