Holly Cusak-McVeigh, curator at the Pratt, did a fantastic job organizing the speakers and her presentation at the ancient house site was exceptional. Thanks also to Vernon Byrd for sharing his expertise on the region's birds, Geoff Coble for explaining the geology of the bay, and to Erik Pullman for detailing the plants of the region. It was a fun day of learning "what forces have shaped this place" and "who has lived here."
There were so many positive comments from the participants that we hope to plan more such days in the future.

Please come out and support the Lions' raffle
With just a little over a week left before the Kachemak Bay Lions Club's 5th annual fundraising raffle, there are still unsold tickets. Each year, 399 tickets are sold at $100 each in order to raise money for programs aimed at preventing blindness. Every 25th tickets drawn wins a prize worth at least $100. The last ticket drawn wins the Harley.
The club will give away the 2011 Harley Davidson Fat Bob at a drawing held on September 10th at AJ's Oldtown Steakhouse & Tavern, formerly Duggan's, located just across the street from the Driftwood Inn in old town.
You can still purchase raffle tickets at Scruggs Automotive, Homer Insurance Center and First National Bank Alaska. You can also find Lions members selling tickets at the Homer Farmer's Market, Spenard Builders Supply & Redden Marine.
The Lions' Club depends on the annual fundraiser to help raise money it then gives out over the course of a year for eye exams and glasses for the needy, many youth sports programs, the Thanksgiving basket program, the Long Term Care Center Christmas drive and many other important programs.
Please come out and support the Lions at AJ's on September 10th, for lots of fun, good food, drinks, and music by the Headwater Band. It's going to be a blast and there's no tellin', maybe you will take home a 2011 Harley Davidson Fat Bob!
We'll see you in Old Town,
Adrienne Sweeney
