Homer's Best Bets

Coming up is one of the Betster's favorite holidays: Labor Day, the holiday where, if you're lucky, you don't labor at all. Except maybe in Alaska, where the rush is now on to get all the chores done you didn't get done in May, June, July and August. Except if the sun pops out and then the desire to get the chores done is surpassed only by the desire to eek out every second of summer that may be left doing fun things, things like these Best Bets.

Flower power As other visitors to Daisy Lee Bitter's garden, this butterfly seemingly enjoys Sunday afternoon amidst the flowers.

BEST LOL BET: Pier One Theatre presents its final comedy of the season, "Moon Over Buffalo." Directed by Joe Lawton, Pier One promises that this story of an acting couple on tour in Buffalo in 1953 will deliver lots of laughs. Performances are scheduled for today through Monday. Call 235-7333 for reservations.

BEST LISTEN TO THE CALM BET: Andres and Navion Condon, internationally touring musicians, perform at 8 p.m. Friday at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center. The performance is sponsored by Bunnell Street Arts Center and Friends of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Andres Condon is a Chilean composer inspired by nature and the poetry of Rumi. The concert with Navion Condon will feature images of Alaska's refuge photographed by Mary Frische and Tom Collopy of Homer. Tickets are available in advance at Bunnell, $10-$20 or pay as you can.

BEST SHOW OFF YOUR SPEED BET: Homer's fastest men and women will compete in the 11th annual Homer Mariner Ironman Triathlon, a fundraiser for the Homer High School Swim and Dive Team. You can compete individually or in a team of three. The course is a 1,000-yard swim, a 15-mile bike ride and a five-mile run. The Betster is sweating just thinking about it. The action starts at 8 a.m. at the Kate Kuhns Aquatic Center. Call 235-5622 or 399-8032 for more information.

BEST PIGSKIN BET: The Mariners play their first conference game of the season Saturday against Kodiak. JV plays at noon; varsity at 3 p.m.

BEST LAST CALL BET: What's that? You haven't been to the Spit all summer? Well, you better go now since a lot of those businesses that have been going nonstop for the past four months will be closing after this weekend until next year. Rain or shine, it's always fun for locals to rub shoulders with visitors from all over as they grab a bite to eat, browse and buy at all the unique shops, take a boat ride or just watch the world go by from the beach.
