The mud was on and spikes were out at the Homer cross-country running Invite Saturday, the race debut of a 5K running course at Lookout Mountain trails. Runners from Kenai, Skyview, Soldotna, Nikiski, Houston and Homer slid and struggled over the course, but the meet ended without major injury or mudbath.

Homer Head Coach Bill Steyer said the Mariners had great individual and team performances at the meet.

The Ms took the most points in the girls varsity race as the only full team competing. Kenai runners swept the top three individual spots.

Cassidy Soistman was Homer's top female finisher, taking seventh in 24 minutes, 55 seconds. Valerie Mastolier came in 8th in 25:18, followed by Pam Jantzi in 25:59 and Alaine Miller in 26:25. Mattea Peters rounded out the field with a 12th-place finish in 29 minutes.

Mariner varsity boys placed second, just behind Skyview and far ahead of Kenai.

"I was very impressed with the running strategy of our boys varsity team," Steyer wrote in an email.

Dan Adickes finished a minute after Kenai leader Fox Michaud in 20:12 for fifth place, followed by Connor McCarron in sixth with a time of 20:24.

Josh Vantrease and Jake Worsfold reeled in more than 10 runners between the first and third (final) lap to finish 10th and 11th in 20:47 and 20:52, respectively.

Drew Brown placed second with a time of 22:34 in the junior varsity boys race. Connor Browne finished 13th of 21 runners with a time of 28:24.Alex Jantzi, Riley Chesser and Riley Alston also ran the jv race. Homer does not have a jv girls team.

Runners felt the new course was an improvement from the old, three-quarter mile course at the high school that athletes run six times to make a race.

Senior Alaine Miller described it as, "one of those ones where you go out and you feel hardcore. Like, 'this is why I run.' It will make all the other ones seem easy."

The Ms run in Skyview Saturday.
