Orthopedic certification

Sally M. Askins

Homer Physical Therapy has announced that one of its therapists, Sally M. Askins, recently has become a nationally certified orthopedic physical therapy specialist.

Askins, who joined the staff of Homer Physical Therapy in 2011, holds a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Her national certification in orthopedics was received after she passed an intensive specialty test administered by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists.

"A physical therapy specialty is a formal recognition of a therapist's advanced clinical knowledge, competence and skills in a special area of practice. ... Orthopedics is a specialty which focuses on the muscular and skeletal systems, disorders and injuries affecting our muscles, bones and joints. Orthopedic physical therapists treat individuals who have injuries or health-related problems that limit their ability to move or perform daily tasks," according to a press release from Homer Physical Therapy.

Askins specializes in working with a variety of orthopedic and sports injuries, as well as patients with chronic pain.

Homer Physical Therapy is located at 4141 Pennock St.
